1622 Atocha Shipwreck 2 Reales in Custom 14k Skull & Sword Pendant

Exploring the 1622 Atocha Shipwreck 2 Reales Grade 3 Coin with Certificate of Authenticity

The story of sunken treasure often evokes images of swashbuckling pirates and hidden chests brimming with gold and jewels. Yet, one of the most significant treasures discovered comes from the wreckage of the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha, which sank in 1622 off the coast of Florida. Among the many fascinating artefacts recovered from the depths of the sea is the 2 Reales coin, Grade 3, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA).

The History Behind the Atocha

The Atocha was part of a fleet transporting immense wealth from the New World back to Spain, laden with precious metals, gemstones, and other valuable commodities. However, on September 6, 1622, a hurricane struck, sending the ship and its bounty to the ocean floor. The loss was devastating for Spain, which was in dire need of funds to support its empire.

The Discovery

For centuries, treasure hunters sought the Atocha, enticed by tales of its riches. It wasn’t until 1985 that famed treasure hunter Mel Fisher and his team made the monumental discovery of the wreck site. The haul included emeralds, gold, and silver coins known as “pieces of eight,” a term that has captured the imagination of many.

The 2 Reales Coin

One of the treasures retrieved is the 2 Reales coin, Grade 3. These coins were the backbone of Spanish colonial currency and have a significant place in global economic history. Grade 3 coins are particularly special because they are in very good condition, retaining clear and detailed engravings despite centuries underwater.

Certificate of Authenticity

Owning an 2 Reales coin from the Atocha wreck is not only a matter of holding a piece of history but also an investment. The Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) ensures that the coin is genuine and comes from the famed shipwreck. This documentation is crucial for collectors and historians alike, as it verifies the coin’s provenance and adds to its value.
